After many years, my existing reciprocal link manager ( me ) is retiring and being replaced by an automated software reciprocal link manager.

If you've a web site with a link directory you'll appreciate what a chore it is to manage any form of reciprocal linking.

You need to create a link directory, research and find other web sites to link to and write and send email link requests. You also need to process link requests from webmasters who want to link to your site, review their sites, respond by email and add new links to your directory.

In addition you must periodically use a reciprocal link checker to see if all links to other sites are still functioning from your site and check if all links from other sites to your site are still present.

If your reciprocal link is not there you must contact the other webmaster to advise them of the reciprocal linking problem. Then you may have to follow up when you receive no response, until eventually you delete the link from your directory.

If being a reciprocal link manager sounds like a lot of work you'd be right.
That's the reason I've decided to replace myself with some software that will do much of the work. But it's taken me a long time to find Reciprocal Link Manager Software that will do what I want.

For those of you who don't yet have a link or resource directory I advise you to pay real attention to what I'm about to tell you. I would suggest you also read about setting up a link directory and the mistakes to avoid. It'll save you countless hours of time, sweat and tears.

But first let's start at the beginning, what's a link directory and why do you need one on your web site if it's so much work ?

What's a Link or Resource Directory ?
A link directory, or resource directory is a page or several pages of hyperlinks on a web page that point to other web pages on other web sites. The hyperlink or web link, the thing that by convention is normally in blue and underlined has a title and also a plain text description of what the other web page the link points to is all about.

You can view the reciprocal linking directory on this site in my Resources section.

Why You Need a Link or Resource Directory ?
Having said what a link directory is, let me explain why you should have one on your web site. Firstly, it acts as a reference source of other quality related web sites that offer information, products and resources that compliment your own site and would be of value and interest to your visitors.

There are five important factors in what I just mentioned and they are Quality, Related, Compliment, Value and Interest.

Secondly, a link or resource directory connects your web site to other sites on the Internet to create the World Wide Web as we know it. But why should you care, well because the web sites you connect to and the other web sites that connect to you are extremely important to the major search engines, like Google, Yahoo, MSN, AltaVista, Ask Jeeves and AlltheWeb etc.

Linking to and from other web sites is important to the search engines because they use linking information as a significant part of what they use to assess how your web pages are ranked.

By ranked I mean how important your web pages are to other sites, since the search engines assume these other sites won't link to your site if it's unimportant or irrelevant.

Of course there's a lot more to ranking your web pages than just linking. But ranking determines where your web pages will appear in a search engines results page when someone types a few words into the search query box on a search engine.

The number of web pages your site links to and has links back from has become increasingly important in determining ranking with some search engines and in particular Google. Linking is just part of a very wide subject, namely Search Engine Optimization.

Google is known to pay particular attention to the quality of sites as determined by its own ranking and how related these sites are that connect to your site and the ones your site connects to.

Of the five linking factors I mentioned earlier, Quality and Related are important to the Search Engines and hence should be important to you, especially if you expect to get visitors from them.

Links to other web sites that compliment your own, but do not compete and offer value and interest to your visitors should also be important to you. Why, because in the eyes of your visitors it makes your site of more value to them. They will bookmark it and come back.

The more repeat visitors your site gets, the more traffic and that can also help to boost your site ranking with the search engines.

Having said my job as reciprocal link manager has been taken by some software is not completely true, I'm still being kept on to set it up and it needs me to authorize or reject links. And I'll still have to find web sites to link to, but I have some other software to help with that, so I'd better get on with it, I have a lot to do.

If you're requesting links from other webmasters you should also read about the mistakes to avoid with reciprocal linking requests

Oh! I almost forgot, if you want to see what this new reciprocal link manager software does, you'll have to take a look yourself.
